Long‐term continuity of steppe grasslands in eastern Central Europe: Evidence from species distribution patterns and chloroplast haplotypes

چکیده

Aim The steppe grasslands of eastern Central Europe are exceptionally species rich and valuable from a nature conservation point view. However, their historical biogeography is still poorly understood. Here we use the regional diversity habitat specialists chloroplast DNA data to investigate potential long-term refugia in this region. Location Pannonian Basin adjacent regions; SW Russia. Taxon Vascular plants. Methods After identifying three main types (meadow steppes, grass steppes rocky steppes), compiled presence–absence grid cells 75 km × km. We analysed dependency specialist climate, topographic heterogeneity geographical distance refugia. For genetic analysis, sampled or four each type used cpDNA markers intraspecific distribution haplotypes. also tested for correspondence between number haplotype diversity. Results Climate topography explained 40% 63% variance Adding increased models all types. Chloroplast haplotypes featured complex pattern across study area. Several showed strong differentiation, suggesting migration waves multiple with only limited subsequent intermixture. Maximum region better correlation per than mean Main conclusions can clearly reject scenario late-Holocene immigration areas outside Basin. Most must have been present since at least early Holocene, highlighting importance lower mountain ranges surrounding as European species. Dispersal limitation resulting lags seem influence on Europe.

System-wide impacts of hospital payment reforms: evidence from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

While there is broad agreement that the way that health care providers are paid affects their performance, the empirical literature on the impacts of provider payment reforms is surprisingly thin. During the 1990s and early 2000s, many European and Central Asian (ECA) countries shifted from paying hospitals through historical budgets to fee-for-service (FFS) or patient-based payment (PBP) metho...
